Tsuut'ina Nation is a Treaty 7 Nation, and the only Dene-speaking group in Treaty 7 Territory. Its reserve sits directly west of Calgary, Alberta.
The Tsuut'ina Nation (Tsúùt'ínà) is the only Dene-speaking group in Treaty 7 Territory. Elders interpret the name as "many people" or "beaver people," and the Nation says both meanings are correct. The Nation takes pride in its link to the Dene through language, culture, customs and territory. It works to keep its own identity, traditions and self-government.
Oral tradition says the Tsuut'ina split from a northern nation, probably the Dane-zaa, and moved to the plains. In 1877, Head Chief "Chiila" Bullhead signed Treaty 7, which created the reserve where the people live today. The reserve, Tsuu T'ina 145, covers about 280 km² directly west of Calgary. The Nation's traditional territory covers a much larger area of southern Alberta.
The Tsuut'ina worldview holds that everything is interconnected and sacred. It honours water, air and fire as part of the circle the Nation calls Natural Law. Work to revitalize the Tsuut'ina language is ongoing. The community is also known for its bull riding displays on National Indigenous Peoples Day and at the Calgary Stampede.
Today, an elected chief and council govern the Nation, led by Chief Ellery Starlight. Economic development includes the Grey Eagle Resort & Casino, which opened in 2007, and Taza, a partnership with the developer Canderel. Taza Park is planned to include 6,500 homes, and its Costco was the first in Canada built on a First Nations reserve.
